"Many people have reported seeing highly-offensive images on their Facebook news feeds," said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at antivirus vendor Sophos, in an interview Tuesday. "But exactly how those images got there and what cause them to appear, is still somewhat of a mystery."
Facebook has currently quarantined the accounts and pages used in the attacks, however, users are still urged to safeguard themselves in the future:
- Make sure your browser is updated.
- Be careful in allowing apps access your personal info.
- Don't ever copy and paste code into your browser's address bar unless you're confident the source is legit.
- Change your password. Make it strong by combining numbers, symbols, upper and lower case letters. as much as possible, avoid using dictionary words.
- Remove unwanted apps. This can be done in the accuount settings.
- Run an antivirus and anti-malware scan on your system.
- Report anything unusual that you see in Facebook by clicking the "report" links on the social network site.
